Maths

At Harry Gosling Primary School, we are committed to providing a high-quality mathematics education that ensures all pupils develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Our approach is rooted in the Maths No Problem scheme of work, which follows a mastery approach based on Singapore Maths. This scheme is one of only two government-approved mastery programmes, and it is implemented consistently across Years 1 to 6.

Our Curriculum

Maths No Problem Mastery Curriculum: This structured scheme ensures that pupils build solid foundations in mathematical understanding through problem-solving and reasoning.

Arithmetic and Maths Fluency: In addition to following the Maths No Problem curriculum, we place a strong emphasis on arithmetic and fluency to develop quick and accurate recall of number facts. We use the NCETM’s Mastering Number Programme to support our children with their fluency and flexibility with number.

Oracy in Maths: Children are given opportunities throughout lessons to discuss methods, use mathematical vocabulary and articulate reasoning. Sentence stems support children to articulate their thinking clearly and fully.

Use of Manipulatives: Lessons incorporate concrete materials such as counters, number bonds, and base-ten blocks to support conceptual understanding before moving on to pictorial and abstract representations.

High-Quality Resources: We use a variety of high-quality teaching tools, including textbooks, workbooks, and digital resources, to enhance learning and engagement.

Structured Lessons: Each lesson is carefully designed to follow a structured approach that includes guided exploration, collaborative discussion, independent practice, and consolidation of learning.

The Mastery Approach

The mastery approach ensures that all pupils develop a deep, secure, and adaptable understanding of mathematical concepts. Key features of this approach include:

  • Small, progressive steps that allow all children to succeed.
  • Emphasis on problem-solving and reasoning to develop critical thinking skills.
  • Opportunities for all learners to access the curriculum, with support and challenge as needed.

Through our approach, we aim to foster a love for mathematics, confidence in problem-solving, and a deep understanding that prepares pupils for their future learning. Maths at Harry Gosling Primary School is not just about learning numbers—it’s about developing skills for life.
