Homework
Completing homework is a great way to practise the skills learnt at school and supports children in taking responsibility for their learning. At Harry Gosling, we believe that the quality of the homework is more important than the quantity. We encourage our pupils to regularly repeat activities over the week to practise their reading, spellings and maths fluency. Homework Expectations:
EYFS
Reading
Children in both Nursery and Reception receive story books that are to be shared as story times with their families. Reception children, once they are able to decode and read, will take home a phonics books linked to their knowledge of sounds, and linked to the school phonics programme (RWI).
Key Stages 1 and 2 (Years 1-6)
Reading
Children should read daily and record what they have read in their reading records. Reading records are checked by the Teacher or Teaching Assistant and should also be checked by parents.
Spelling Practice
A spelling test is given each week. The children are then given the words to practice for the following week’s test. They are expected to practice their words and memorise the spelling using the ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check, method.
Online Work – Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) for Maths
Times Table Rock Stars is the websites used to set maths homework tasks. The children have individual logins to this sites and will be assigned individual tasks to complete. They are also able to choose some of their own games to practice their skills. The assigned work is in line with what is taught in class and children get immediate feedback from the website. Teachers are able to track and record which children are completing the homework successfully.
*Year 6 will also receive homework though CGP books in preparation for SATs.
Stepney Partnership Family Homework Challenge
As part of our work with the Stepney Partnership, every holiday we take part in the Family Learning Challenge. Each child receives a leaflet/posted on google classroom with learning and activities linking to a topic. The Family Homework Challenge is also emailed home to all parents. Children record activities they have tried and return any work to school. Children who complete several activities will receive a certificate.
